The document is scanned via the contact image sensor method. Light emitted from the LED reflects off the document, shines through the lens and is "read" by the image sensor. |

The document is divided into a fine grid and one by one the light that reflects off of each square is "read," and determined to contain either "black" or "white" information. This data is converted to electrical impulses and transmitted. Accordingly, on the receiving side, the electrical impulses are converted back and printed to the paper in black and white.

In plain paper fax machines the method of applying toner to paper is the same as for copiers. The toner is attracted by the negative charge on the
sensor and then fixed to paper with heat and pressure. |
